The GTS 20 (and the 19) are devoid of a medial post – the firm wedge of foam that is commonly seen in motion-control or stability running shoes. The Achilles dip has a ribbed textile for grip and is joined to the rest of the collar with an invisible seam. But it’s that attention to detail, those hundreds of little things that make Brooks gear every bit as exceptional as you.

The upper is almost one-piece – the arch side has a thicker mesh with fused reinforcement and Brooks logo. The Adrenaline GTS 20’s sole unit has undergone slight changes from the 19’s overhaul to retain the soft DNA LOFT crash pad in the mid-to-lateral heel, which now tapers forward to gradually transition into the familiar BioMoGo DNA foam supporting the rest of the shoe. Popular for shorter distance racing as well as training and daily mileage running, the lower stack of midsole foam offers inherent stability and a lighter feel on your foot when compared to max-stack shoes. In the GTS 20, Brooks have added a slight overlay in the upper on the medial side for extra support for overpronators. Its balance of plush cushioning with flexibility, stability and secure fit make it the perfect shoe for those that want a smooth ride but need support.The updated design is here to stay, with only minor tweaks this year such as a gradual transition between the two foams and an asymmetric upper design. Importantly, at the top of the big toe, Brooks designers have opted to include a small reinforced patch. The internal heel counter is top notch to direct heel motion forward, with padding around the collar that is ultra in the back and tapers toward the laces. If you have had a good experience with your old shoes and have stayed injury free then you might, understandably, be reluctant to change brand or model. On the other hand, you have Saucony and Reebok steamrolling the competition with their Pwrrun and Floatride midsole tech.

Because of the extra protection, daily mileage shoes tend to be heavier than their race day and tempo counterparts.

The Adrenaline continues to shine as an all-around trainer for runners needing steady support, durability, and cushion for everyday runs whether speed or distance is the focus. Brooks does a great job of cobbling together dependable (but rather bland) running shoes, and that road eventually leads to durable products. If you’re looking for maximum softness and enjoy features such as a plush feel under your feet and protection from impact, try shoes with the most cushioning. Gone was the medial post that had been present since 2003, replaced by less aggressive guide rails that run around the outside of the upper.
