About this deal

Produced in 1991 to promote the reissue of Tolkien under Harper Collins during the 'Tolkien Centenary' in 1992. Over 100 million copies of its many editions have been sold around the world, and occasional collectors’ editions become prized and valuable items of publishing. Then the back is actually all about the end of the book and shows the boat that sails away with people who helped fight in the battle.

I did read “The Hobbit”, but eyeing its three-volume monstrosity of a sequel, I realised it’s not what I want to spend my time on. It shows Bilbo before he went away on his adventure, and whilst there’s so many other pieces of artwork in the book – I’m so happy they picked this one for the front. They're not thick like the illustrated collection but not thin enough that the pages appear transparent. Lee’s original illustrations have been reproduced to the artist’s exacting standards, in a scale and quality never seen before, and have been augmented by several entirely new images, including enchanting endpapers depicting the One Ring long before it came into Frodo’s possession, three frontispieces, two revised versions of existing illustrations, a new image titled ‘The Grey Havens’ and an exclusive giclée print. This very special deluxe edition is quarterbound in cloth and red leather, with raised ribs on the spine and stamped in two foils. I will be reading this edition when I do my annual reread of The Lord of the Rings in December, though I have a feeling I will not allow myself to have my usual cup of tea at my elbow when I have this particular book in hand.

Boxed gift set of Tolkien's classic masterpieces, fully illustrated throughout in watercolour by the acclaimed and award-winning artist, Alan Lee, Conceptual Designer on Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT films. This one-volume hardback edition contains the complete text, fully corrected and reset, which is printed in red and black and features, for the very first time, thirty colour illustrations, maps and sketches drawn by Tolkien himself as he composed this epic work. R. Tolkien, the reclusive, pipe-smoking Oxford don, was in the vanguard, and so great was his achievement that his name became virtually synonymous with the literature of fantasy.

Also appearing are two full-size maps drawn by Christopher Tolkien revealing all the detail of Middle-earth. Here’s what The Folio Society had to say about this incredible new set: The greatest classic of fantasy fiction and one of the most celebrated stories of all time, The Lord of the Rings defined a genre and created a world that inspires and enchants to this day.

In 2001, Peter Jackson’s film adaptation helped to introduce the epic to an even wider audience, and Alan Lee was the natural choice for a lead concept artist winning him the 2004 Academy Award for Art Direction. When two hobbits were crawling up Mount Doom, forced to leave more and more behind – Sam’s beloved kitchen gear and remnants of hope that they can succeed – my lips felt parched and my heart hollow. Echoes of Truth neatly and masterfully encapsulates how Tolkien not only incorporated, but explored how Christian thought permeates his works. The front shows a very busy image of the battle which includes a lot of the Rohirrim, but I can’t pick out any of our main characters. If you’d like to file an allegation of infringement, you’ll need to follow the process described in our Copyright and Intellectual Property Policy. These include the pages from the Book of Mazarbul, reproduced to accompany the famous ‘Bridge of Khazad-dum’ chapter. Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. So this new edition featuring so many examples of the author's art was a no-brainer, almost a must-have. Yes, Frodo was the Ring Bearer, but if not for Sam, he wouldn’t have even brought the formidable thing to the Cracks of Doom. Steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness, these works of sweeping fantasy have touched the hearts of young and old alike.

Tolkien’s great masterpiece, with a strong focus on the author’s exacting language, along with commentary from his letters and interviews.

Overall The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Editions are absolutely beautiful editions and I can’t wait to read them and to jump into Middle-Earth again. I guess, for many it might not be the most exciting part of the book, but for me, reading it felt like I’ve made that impossible climb myself. There exist different families, different work teams, and versatile environments in any aspect of our lives. The naked hardcover is plain black, save for the stamped Eye of Sauron (visible in the top photo) on the front cover, and the red or gold lettering and ringspell on the spine.
