Launchpad S comes with Ableton Live music software (Launchpad Edition), used by some of the world’s top DJs and producers – plus it supports other grid-based music applications such as FL Studio. All the features of the original – now with much brighter buttons, faster refresh and expanded app/system support. I also have the AKAI LPD8 which, along with the sliders the LP has with FL Studio (which work great, sliding your finger across pads is quite easy and smooth, I do suggest using the joint of your finger instead of the tip, it works a lot better) gives me all the controls I need. You can simultaneously control your instruments, mixer, effects, launch loop and play drums/melodies. Chnage the way you produce and perform, use them together for total hands-on control of your mixer, instruments and effects.Apart from the increased brightness, an improvement in the new model is the green LED colour: where the Launchpad 1's is a rather sickly pea-green, the Launchpad S shines out with an emerald intensity. I am amazed how quickly he has got to grips with this and is learning new tunes to play all the time. Novation has created a Launchpad app for iPad, which hosts its own sounds and enables you to trigger loops with your Launchpad S hardware. It took some practice to figure out how to use it and I highly recommend bying the full version of ableton to use alongside it.

The launchpad version is very restriced , and only lets you open one of the demo sessions it comes with.g large bass speakers or multiple speakers may have to be shipped via a pallet service which may take 1-2 days. As Chris mentions in his video, the small buttons are great, you can reach them all with your thumbs (holding it more like a Tenori-On), and the fully rubberized back is great for popping the unit on the right-side deck of say a Nord Lead 4 or Blofeld.
