About this deal

It’s a history story telling you about life just after World War 2 but you also get to know all the characters because Lucy Strange expresses their feelings so well: you remember them for a long time.

This was ostensibly an economy measure although Gibbons, in later life, suspected other reasons, particularly the increasing distraction from work that arose from her relationship with Walter Beck. The Woods in Winter (1970) was her last published novel; she decided at that point that she was no longer prepared to subject her work to editorial control. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "An imaginary plant associated with superstition, fertility and intense rustic passion". It is also home to a profusion of orchids and one of our most stunning spring displays of bluebells.Mr Hardy tries to convince Nanny Jane that Henry is also going mad – and sometimes Henry wonders if he’s right too. Further housing development in the early years of this century delivered St Julian’s Wood and Orchard Meadow.

The ending was happy and calm and I wouldn’t change a thing about, it but I wasn’t that happy when we finished because I didn’t want it to end! I like this description at the beginning on page 89 which talks about secrets growing like mushrooms. I like her because she is a little sidekick and will always help Henrietta in no matter what situation. Explore the wide open areas with your four legged friend, or take some time for yourself within the peaceful broadleaved woodland. The series ran until November 1943, and includes many of Gibbons's private reflections on the conflict.

I enjoyed solving the mysteries around the characters, particularly Moth, the lady in the woods: why did she live there? The title story in Gibbons's 1940 collection, Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm, failed to equal the impact of the original.

Carlton Marsh - A wetland nature lover’s delight and a core wildlife site of the Dearne Valley, Carlton Marsh hugs the Cudworth Dyke and is best viewed from the footpath on the old railway line running the length of the site. I lost last year and this year I will be even more grateful for every drop of nightingale song that I can squeeze out of the bird. Unfortunately over the last twenty years both the Ash and Corsican Pine have become diseased, with Ash dieback significantly affecting the Ash and Red Band Needleblight the Causican Pine. This has become one of my favourite books because the main character shows a lot of determination when she proves some of the people wrong. In Westwood, Morgan appears in the guise of the playwright "Gerard Challis", a pompous, humourless bore. Fingringhoe Wick - Set in a spectacular position overlooking the Colne Estuary in north Essex, it is a wildlife haven, with diverse habitats attracting hundreds of different bird species and wild flowers.

This book didn’t really make me want to find out more about history because it doesn’t have a lot of history in it, but I still would love to read more books that Lucy has written! For Gibbons, the suburb offered an ideal vantage point for exploring both urban modernity and countryside traditionalism, and for observing both literary modernism and the vestigial Romanticism of popular rural fiction. n 5] In her introduction to the book's 2011 reprint, Lynne Truss describes it as "a rich, mature novel, romantic and wistful, full of rounded characters and terrific dialogue" that deserved more commercial success than it received. During the remainder of the 1930s Gibbons produced five more novels, as well as two poetry collections, a children's book, and a number of short stories. The medieval moat that sits at its heart lends this wood its name, as well as a fittingly historic feel.Grafham Water SSSI - Loaded with spring delights, including the melodic song of the nightingale and the spring chorus of the garden warbler and nightcap. There are strong parallels between Lee’s quest to record oral folk singers and his nightingale concerts. The couple became engaged, and enjoyed regular weekends together, signing hotel registers as a married couple using false names.
