About this deal

With a usefully low stack height, no-gap faceplate and available in 35mm and 50mm length, the Horizon stem is bang up-to-date. The twin clamps also use a zero-gap design, so they close fully at the bottom and then you snug up the top two bolts using a crisscross process. There are two diameters to get right when choosing a stem: that of the steerer tube and that of your handlebars. It is worth bearing in mind that the manufacturers intended use for a road stem is on the road, and likewise mountain bike components are designed for use on mountain bikes.

My default is a 0 degree rise 60mm stem on a flat 720mm bar, I will swap in a -17 stem for big pedalling days. Designed using feedback from Nukeproof's pro riders and support staff, the Horizon mountain bike stem enhances your rides' performance and completes your cockpit in style. Read on for the rundown of our favorite stems, and if you're unsure of what to look for skip to the bottom of the page where we explain how to choose the best mountain bike stem for your riding. The longer stem is like a longer stick requiring larger and larger swings as the stick becomes longer. I’m a regular average sized person though so I fit most bikes in my preferred size without making dramatic changes. If the angle of sweep and rotation works for you the actual bar feel is really nicely balanced between accuracy and buzz damping control. It is twitchy on thin singletrack ‘rabbit runs’ I ride plus frontend lifts on short steep climbs if seated. Getting the expanding plastic wedge block assembly between the steerer and the bars is more of a fight though, so prepare to be patient and remove children's ears and delicate objects from the immediate area before attempting assembly. v=1662650278","variant_ids":[43251545604332,43251545800940,43251546030316]},"available":true,"name":"Nukeproof Horizon Stem - Black \/ 35. Of course, if you've snapped up a budget mountain bike, the stem may not be the only component you want to upgrade, so check out our guides to the best brakes, forks, handlebars, and grips too. If we have an outlier in terms of stiffness, we then go on to test it back-to-back against a benchmark model on the same bike on the same track to put the performance into context. Plus, as is the trend with most mountain bike stems, it’s ultra-short for sharp steering on super-technical downhill courses. Speaking of spacers, there should always be a spacer on top of the stem if you have a carbon fibre fork, and the steerer should extend into the spacer. Both bikes are of similar geo so would a compromise of a 60mm stem seem adequate or will this affect the handling too much do you think? The Giant has a 100mm stem on just now and longer reach bars, you can see with getting a 60mm stem I would get the reach down to 510mm and with compact bars the hoods would be closer too, I think 10mm here and there will be fine, I'm not an inflexible cripple yet. Mountain bikes used to have fairly short reach measurements (the distance between the middle of the stem cap and an imaginary vertical line taken from the center of the bottom bracket) and long stems.

Despite some aggressive-looking sharp edges we’ve been giving it a complete beasting for a while now without any ill effects.

As you’d perhaps expect from a bike designed to straddle road and off-road, the stems found on gravel bikes normally sit somewhere between mountain bikes and road bikes in terms of length. I came off hardtails with head angles too steep to ride what I was riding for years (yet I was still riding what I was riding just fine, I just never got the memo that what was fine before was now sacrilege ) and was running a 100mm stem and 740 bars. Also, to add to the confusion, the steerer-tube diameter is normally quoted in inches and the bar diameter in millimetres. v=1662650278","variant_ids":[43251545833708,43251546259692]},"available":true,"name":"Nukeproof Horizon Stem - Copper \/ 31. v=1662650278","variant_ids":[43251546226924]},"available":true,"name":"Nukeproof Horizon Stem - Black \/ 35.
