I pretty much have the idea that in general the folk movement from the 60s and 70s from Britain as well as these particular series among many others with its remarkably intelligent and deep plots and contents branded in fire a spiritual impromptu in many children from that time, in my opinion some neo-pagans born there. A Japanese visual novel released in 2004, which spawned a 2007 film and a 2007–08 television series based on it, was named after the band because screenwriter Jun Maeda mistakenly believed it to mean the word "family" in Irish. [70] Brennan family [ edit ] Robin (The Hooded Man)", the title theme from the series, was released on a 7-inch single in 1984, featuring actor Michael Praed as Robin of Sherwood on the sleeve. Since then, Clannad regularly includes a "Robin Of Sherwood Medley" in their setlist that typically includes the title song, and segments of "Lady Marian", "Herne" and "Ancient Forest", as well as the unreleased "Dance" from Series 1 and two songs from Series 3 entitled "Action" and "Royal" that have only been released on live albums including Clannad: Live in Concert (released 2005).

Initially known as Clann as Dobhar (Irish for 'Family from Dore'), [3] they shortened their name to Clannad in 1973. [4] By 1979 they had released three albums and toured Europe and the US. From 1980 to 1982 they operated as a six-piece with their sister and niece Eithne ( Enya). In 1982 they gained international attention with their single " Theme from Harry's Game". [3] [5] They experimented with New Age and pop-influenced sounds in the 1980s and 1990s [6] [7] and their music came to be defined as almost purely Celtic, making them innovators of that genre. [8] In 1997, after 15 albums, they took a break and pursued solo projects. [9] The band regrouped in 2007 as a four piece with Moya, Ciarán, Noel and Pádraig and completed a world tour in 2008. [10] [11] In 2013, Pól rejoined and they released their first studio album in fifteen years. [12] Pádraig Duggan died in 2016 and the group embarked on their farewell tour in 2020 as a quartet. [13] Following this success, the group released their seventh studio album, Magical Ring, in March 1983. In addition to "Theme from Harry's Game", it featured a mix of original and traditional Irish songs plus a cover of " I See Red" by Jim Rafferty. The album peaked at No.26 in the UK, and became the group's first album to be certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). [37] Two singles were released from the album: "I See Red" went to No.19 in Ireland and No.81 in the UK, and " Newgrange" reached No.30 and No.65, respectively. In April 1983, Clannad were awarded a Hot Press Music Award for their impact on Irish music in the previous year. [38] Around this time, Maire noted that although the group had lost fans of their traditional folk sound, they had gained new ones as a result of their commercial success. There's a feeling in all our music, an ambience that stems directly from where we were brought up and to have to define our sound, I always say that if they were to visit Gweedore they wouldn't need to ask."– Ciarán Brennan [62] Willman, Chris (5 March 1989). Clannad began in the early '70s as a folk group covering Beatles, Rolling Stones and Joni Mitchell songs in their native Gweedore (their name is derived from the Irish words Clann as Dobhar — family from the town of Dore). Maire Brennan played harp and sang, brothers Pol and Ciaran did nice things with flutes, acoustic bass and piano. Rhythmic support was provided by guitarist uncles the Duggan twins. They collected old Donegal songs and re-interpreted them. Like U2, it was the winning of a festival that spurred them on, providing much-needed equipment and publicity to continue their music.
