The centre of the story, she is a merry girl who has many friends but chooses to hang out with the boy. The girl's determination to spend her days as happily as possible to create joyful memories of her last days surprised me a lot. She is almost always presented as a cheerful girl who seems to take the idea of death lightly (she often uses her death as an excuse when annoying the boy, which is quite funny.). But at the same time we are also shown indications that she is worried. I don't know how to convey this feeling but whenever she mentioned the word "death" I felt like my heart was about to stop. I questioned myself a lot, why can't this brave girl be spared from this disease? Honestly, Sakura had a really big impression on me after I finished reading the story. This book doesn't cover up the fact, or say maybe it'll turn around, that our main heroine is going to pass away. But the amazing thing the book does is take you on a life, however short it is, to see how you can enjoy it. And it gives you a reason to question what life means to you, and the people around you. It hits every single emotional bit it is supposed to. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas seems like, at first, just another doomed romance. Boy meets terminally ill girl. Girl changes boy's worldview, or vice versa. Boy and girl fall in love. Girl passes away, leaving boy brokenhearted, but better for the time they shared. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is one of my least favorite manga this year. However, regardless of my frustration with the protagonists, I liked the overall message of the story: You can enjoy life even if you have a terminal illness. Optimism is immensely difficult to achieve in this case, so cancer victims who learn to live with the idea of dying soon are inspiring in their own right.

The manga focuses on their differences of these 2 very different people by showing a lot of their interactions: a boy who has been isolated from society and has decided to submerge himself into the world of novels instead, and a girl who has had numerous friends and has spent happy memories with them throughout her life, but without showing her secret. An odd pair, I first thought. But I didn't think this novel would be so successful in presenting them together throughout the story. Having a pancreatic disease, Sakura had a little time in this beautiful world. Although Haruki & Sakura both were classmates, they were like strangers. Suddenly, they came to know each other through the library committee. She used to mix with him by force as Haruki seemed to be shut up. One day in the corridor of a hospital he found a diary telling about a disease which was Sakura's. That's how Haruki gets to know about her little life. He was the only one outside the family who knew that bad news. Sakura was given advice that she should spend time on those things she really wanted to do. Then, she started to do so according to the advisor, Haruki. Both of them made great effects on their life. There are many subtle details that slowly develop and showcase their relationship. They are perhaps too subtle for the manga. The art wasn't developed in a way to showcase these subtitles so that the reader could put together their import later. The art isn't bad... in fact I found the art in the last 25% so beautiful with these delightful screens that added so much depth to the art. This is a time where the fact this was adapted from a light novel caused the I Want to Eat Your Pancreas manga to suffer a little. I could see that the mangaka artist started to really get in stride with the art, but too late for it to impact the middle of the story like it needed to. In the end the frames were better developed to showcase the idea of an event better in a single frame. I always thought I am enough and I will never need to know another person. And you gave me reasons why I need to know someone I can rely on. You will always be remembered. Hope you and my darling cats are enjoying there. You went away on the same day for me. Hope you stay together for long, comfort my kitties when they remember me. When you cry, they will stay and comfort you too. They are very good at that. Stay warm. Well, you see, right when the writing has been going from the “alright” to the “meh” territory and I was contemplating whether to rate this 5 or 6, the finale came around. Ironically, I’d say it was thanks to the novel being so self-aware about how everyone saw the conclusion of terminal illness coming. Thanks to confessing right from the start what is going to happen the story was able to go a bit further than being just a generic final moments of a patient melodrama. A finale that was surprisingly nicely executed with well done emotional pay-off. Now, as much as I would love to write in greater detail about it, I would also like to not rob you of the opportunity to experience it first-hand, so you’ll have to be satisfied with me not spelling everything out. What’s important is that I was suddenly contemplating not between 5 or 6, but between 6 or 7. And I’m possibly getting soft as “good” it is. There, I didn’t completely trash a mostly sentimental piece of fiction, save your booing for later. Overall, this manga manages to be insightful without shoving weighty, profound pinnacles of philosophy into your head. It leaves you to draw your own conclusions without seeming patronizing, and maintains a healthy balance of humor and looming grief. She chooses to confide in him and becomes his only friend. The rest of the story invovles them getting to know each other and beoming emotionally intimate.Keep in mind that at the point of writing this review, I have yet to see the movie, so however well the adaptation performed, it bears no influence on my evaluation of the novel.
