Like I’d done, they’d kept it a secret, often from their closest family and friends, bcause they didn’t want to be judged.

With haunting candour, David Sheff traces the first subtle warning signs: the denial, the 3am phone calls ( is it Nic? the police? the hospital?), the attempts at rehab. His preoccupation with Nic became an addiction in itself, and the obsessive worry and stress took a tremendous toll. People tell of their heartbreak, but also of hope and healing. They say the movie validates their experience and they feel less alone. Some have written to say that it caused them to face their own or a loved one’s problem for the first time. A teenager wrote that she was addicted to pain pills and was suicidal, but no one – not even her family and friends – knew. After the movie, she went home and told her parents. She was afraid they’d yell and punish her, but instead they cried with her, embraced her and asked how they could help. She was beginning treatment. She says that male youth was previously prized artistically, but in more recent centuries was displaced by a preference for adult masculinity. [15] [16] Accordingly, she argues that male youthfulness was desexualised in art. [17] She says that, "At the end of the 20th century, guilty panic about pedophilia completed the criminalisation of awareness of the desires and the charms of boys... Where once boys were considered 'made for love and loved of all' they are now considered attractive only to a perverted taste." [13] [18] According to Greer, "among the attributes that are on the verge of extinction is youthful narcissism". [19] She also wrote that, "Boy sex is irresponsible, spontaneous and principally self-pleasuring". [16] What was going on? What I now know is that though on the outside it appeared that Nic was doing well, he suffered inside, plagued by self-doubt, anxiety and depression.
