The Monsters and the Critics, and Other Essays · Beowulf and the Critics · Tolkien On Fairy-stories · Edward Lense, also writing in Mythlore, identifies a figure from Celtic mythology, Balor of the Evil Eye, as a possible source for the Eye of Sauron. Balor's evil eye, in the middle of his forehead, was able to overcome a whole army. He was king of the evil Fomoire, who like Sauron were evil spirits in hideously ugly bodies. Lense further compares Mordor to "a Celtic hell", just as the Undying Lands of Aman resemble the Celtic Earthly Paradise of Tír na nÓg in the furthest (Atlantic) West; and Balor "ruled the dead from a tower of glass". [6] Antagonist [ edit ] The united host rested for about three years in Imladris, forging weapons and making plans. They crossed the Misty Mountains over many passes and marched down Anduin where they were joined by Elves from Greenwood the Great led by king Oropher and his son Thranduil and Elves of Lórien under King Amdír, [3] as well as by the kindred of Durin from Khazad-dûm. [2] At the southern eaves of Eryn Galen, the host turned south-east and marched through desolate areas that had once been the Entwives' gardens. They, and probably the Entwives themselves, had been destroyed by Sauron to deprive the Alliance's forces of supplies. [4]

Notes

When Morgoth left Angband much later to corrupt the newly awakened Atani (Men), Sauron directed the war against the Elves. [12] He conquered the Elvish isle of Tol Sirion, so that it became known as Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves. [13] There he established himself as the Lord of the Werewolves, with Draugluin, sire of the Werewolves, and Thuringwethil, a Vampire herald, at his side. Auden, W. H. (June 1968). [27] The Númenóreans themselves gave him the name Zigúr, meaning "Sorcerer" in Adûnaic. When disguising himself in the Second Age, he called himself Annatar ("Lord of Gifts"; anna = gift and tar = king, lord), Artano ("High-smith"), and Aulendil ("Friend of Aulë"). [16]

After 500 years of peace in Middle-earth, Sauron began to make his move. Morgoth's former servant established a base of his own in Mordor and, another 500 years later, began building the infamous tower of Barad-Dûr that would host his massive eye in the centuries to come. While Morgoth sought to conquer and defeat, Sauron preferred to subjugate and control his opponents and 1200 years after the start of the Second Age, the corrupt Maia enacted a plan to bring all major races under his sway. Parts of Sauron's portrayal in The Rings of Power are considerable deviations from the works of Tolkien. First of all, there is no mention of Galadriel having travelled to Númenor in the company of a stranger in any of Tolkien's works, and she was probably in Eregion with her husband the entire time the first season is set. Also, in Tolkien's work Sauron appeared in Eregion in the guise of Annatar, Lord of Gifts, claiming to be an emissary of the Valar and a student of Aulë.

In S.A. 3431, the Elves of Lindon led by Gil-galad and Círdan marched eastward and were awaited by Elendil at Amon Sûl. The combined host marched towards Imladris, where they joined with Lord Elrond, who was Gil-galad's herald, and acted as his second-in-command in the coming campaign. Sauron is the Quenya term for "the Abhorred". [10] In Sindarin, it is translated as Gorthaur from gor ("horror, dread") and thaur ("abominable, abhorrent"). [26] Other names Lord of the Rings’ Star Morfydd Clark Explains Galadriel’s Decision at the End of Episode 1 (Video) What Was Sauron Before He Was Evil? In the seventh year of the siege, it became so pressing that Sauron himself came forth. His onslaught was terrible and the siege was almost broken as Sauron and his host advanced to the slopes of Mount Doom. There he was encountered by the captains of the Alliance, Gil-galad and Elendil and to their side stood Elrond, Círdan and Isildur. Sauron fought with Gil-galad and Elendil, and both were slain. As Elendil fell, his sword was broken beneath him. Yet Sauron was thrown down, too, and Isildur seized the hilt of his father's sword and cut off the finger on which Sauron wore the One Ring. Being bereft of its power, Sauron was no longer able to hold a physical form and perished. [2] Aftermath [ edit | edit source ]

Schedule

The Alliance pursued the Orcs, who were then in disarray, and killed them all. The Barad-dûr was levelled but its foundations remained behind since they were built with the power of the One Ring which was not destroyed. The thousands of dead Men and Elves were taken out of Mordor and buried in the Dagorlad Plain.

Sauron also appears or is referenced in a number of works that are not direct adaptations of The Lord of the Rings or its associated mythos:The Eye of Sauron is mentioned in The Stand, a post-apocalyptic novel written by Stephen King. The villain Randall Flagg possesses an astral body in the form of an "Eye" akin to the Lidless Eye. The novel itself was conceived by King as a "fantasy epic like The Lord of the Rings, only with an American setting". [22] The idea of Sauron as a sleepless eye that watches and seeks the protagonists also influenced King's epic fantasy series The Dark Tower; its villain, the Crimson King, is a similarly disembodied evil presence whose icon is also an eye.
