About this deal

Electric, electronic, or digital fabric cutting machines, in contrast, have no requirement for strength but are more expensive than manual cutters. You can learn all about the differences and similarities in my AccuQuilt vs. Cricut comparison, though! Pros Understanding cross-compatibility is a little complicated, so I recommend reading my AccuQuilt and Sizzix die compatibility post for the best understanding! Invest in a good pair of fabric scissors: Using the right type of scissors for your project can make a big difference in the quality of your cuts. Fabric scissors are designed to cut through fabric smoothly without causing fraying or jagged edges. Make sure to keep them sharp by using a sharpening stone or taking them to a professional for sharpening.

Next, decide on the size of the circle you want to cut. Measure and mark the center point of the circle on your fabric using a fabric marker or chalk. To make sure the circle is symmetrical, use a compass or a round object as a guide to draw a perfect circle.

Can cut paper, emboss, and work with more than just fabric! I use mine primarily for card making and as an embossing machine.

You must buy adapters for different types of dies, and costs add up as you must also buy all dies you want to use. You can use a few different methods to do this, depending on your personal preferences and the size of the circle you’re cutting. One option is to use a large embroidery hoop to stretch the fabric tight. Simply place the fabric over the hoop and tighten the screw to hold it in place. This will keep the fabric taut and prevent it from moving around while you cut.

Between imprecisions when cutting quilt fabric by hand to ever-so-slightly inaccurate seams when piecing, there are many ways a quilt can go from being perfect to looking like an amateur made it. Well, the Big Shot Plus opening is smaller than the Go! opening, which means many dies that fit through the Go! won’t squeeze into the Big Shot Plus. I watch TV while I cut fabric. I’m so far 100% injury-free using my fabric cutters, but unfortunately, my fingers can’t say the same when I use my rotary cutter and only half paying attention.

Finally, before beginning to sew, make sure to add seam allowance to your circle to ensure a clean, finished look. Sizzix machines also use special dies, called Bigz Dies. These dies are similar to AccuQuilt’s dies in that they have a steel blade ensconced in foam. It’s also a little annoying that you have to buy upgrades for the software if you want to import and use SVG files and work with embroidery designs in Silhouette Studio. I begrudgingly shelled out the money for their Silhouette Studio Business Edition so I could have these extra features. Why You Need a Fabric Cutter In addition to the machine itself, you need to consider the cost of supplies needed to get started. For instance, the AccuQuilt and Sizzix machines require dies for every fabric-cutting project! Now, there are several popular Sizzix machines, but I recommend the Sizzix Big Shot Plus for home users and Sizzix Big Shot Pro for industrial needs.

Use a cutting mat: A cutting mat can protect your work surface and keep your fabric in place while you cut. It also provides a grid to help you measure and cut your fabric accurately.

Some machines like the Cricut Maker use a small rotary blade to cut fabric, while others like the AccuQuilt and Sizzix Big Shot rely on cutting dies. Consider These Things Before Purchasing While there are other less expensive Cricut cutting machines (ex. Cricut Explore Air 2 or Cricut Explore 3), they require bonding fabric before cutting. This is perfect for applique, but I don’t bond quilt fabrics. Before taking your fabric to the sewing machine, make sure to add seam allowance to the edges of your freshly pressed circle, ensuring that your final product will have the necessary room for stitching and finishing. Seam allowance is the extra fabric that you leave around the edges of your circle to allow for the seams to be sewn. Without it, your circle will be too small and tight, making it difficult to stitch and finish.

To ensure your fabric stays taut while cutting a circle, it’s important to hold it firmly in place with one hand while cutting with the other. This will prevent any wrinkles or folds from forming, which can lead to inaccurate cuts. You also don’t have to select a material to cut (as in Cricut Design Space). This Brother cutting machine has auto blade sensor technology that’s promised to give more accurate cuts on different materials. Whether you’re making a quilt, a tablecloth, or a piece of clothing, a neatly cut circle is sure to add a professional touch to your finished product. Pressing With a connected user interface, the Brother SDX125E and higher models have a built-in scanner (hence “scan” in its name) to convert drawings and images to cuts without much technical expertise needed. When measuring and marking your fabric, it’s important to use straight lines and precise measurements to ensure accuracy in your project. One way to do this is by using a ruler or tape measure to mark the circumference of your circle. First, determine the diameter of your circle by measuring from one side to the other. Then, divide that measurement by two to get the radius. Use the radius to measure out the circumference of your circle along the edge of your fabric, making small marks at regular intervals.
