About this deal

I had a project where I designed a "wireless power switch" for PC that allowed you to turn on/off your PC pretty much from anywhere (where you have access to the internet, of course).

As most of you probably know, you cannot simply plug in a PSU to the wall and turn it on. The PSU needs a connection to the motherboard to be told to turn on. When you press the power button on your case, it jumps the green wire to a ground, telling the PSU to turn on. When this “jump” is broken, the PSU shuts off.

Lightly touch a metal screwdriver to the two power switch header pins, and the system will turn on if everything is connected correctly. This process accomplishes the same thing as hitting the power button on your case when properly connected, or using an onboard power button on your motherboard.

Magnetic switches actuate when a magnetic field comes within a certain distance. They’re latching by nature, staying actuated as long as the magnet is in range. That means to use one of these as a power switch the magnet that actuates it has to be moved close to the switch and then moved away. Because of the variety of possible hardware configurations, it isn't possible to diagnose every possible issue. Instead, we’re covering steps you can take to identify the problem and fix it. Whether you’re building a PC that has never successfully turned on, or are trying to fix a new issue for one that was previously operating correctly, these diagnostic solutions should be equally helpful. Diagnosis Extra Wire - Only necessary if your harness doesn't have enough lead as-is. Match your gauge as best as possible.Panel Nut - A thin hex nut that works with the washer to hold the switch to the case. Threads must match the switch body. A lot of new PC modders start with the same things: side-panel windows used to be a very common first mod but they’re pretty much standard issue now. One of the other most common initial mods is the power switch.

If that didn’t work, it’s time to unplug every power cable that is connected to your components. This includes the 24 pin and the CPU power cables connected to your motherboard, additional power cables running to any PCIe devices like your GPU, and SATA and Molex power connectors connected to storage devices and other accessories. You might also consider monitoring your PC by using a ping from the RPi, say every 5 minutes and if there is no response repeat the ping and if still no response, run the reset sequence. Using the crontab in Linux is an easy way to run a script/program at set intervals. When using hibernation, the resume process is slower than sleep, but it helps you conserve more battery. If you’re not getting a POST code, and you’ve already followed the steps above, then it’s worth making sure that your motherboard’s BIOS is current.Motherboard Power LED Positive (Plz note, i have limited the current here to 5V to make it GPIO safe and use a Y splitter so i can still see the power light on my case, you dont have to do this and could therefore not use this pin) Start by unplugging the cable that runs from your PC’s power supply to the outlet before doing anything else inside your computer. Also, be sure to disconnect any external peripherals, like keyboards, mice or external hard drives, and monitor cables that are plugged into your computer. USB devices or display connections cables can occasionally cause power issues, and if your PC boots without any plugged in, plug each one separately and test until you’ve found the problematic peripheral, and either try and boot without it or test with a replacement. Throughout the diagnostic process, we will be talking in detail about various PC hardware. Feel free to use this PC building guide as a reference for any questions you have regarding how PC hardware is put together, or questions about specific components.
