Cooper was inspired to write the book based on experiences in his life. He had grown up on a farm, and had thus been familiar with animals "cycling through". As an adult, Cooper and his family adopted two cats. [1] A couple of years after the adoption, one of them died, and Cooper observed that his daughter was less familiar with death as a child than he had been. [2] I think the book is also about change. Nothing stays the same forever. Little Cat had to grow bigger and bigger and bigger. Big Cat had to grow older and older. That's just how life is. You can't stay a kitten forever. No matter how much fun being a kitten is, there's a time when you're a CAT. That doesn't mean all the fun is gone from life. You can still be a kitten-at-heart I suppose. Change is inevitable. It can be sad. But it can also be happy. There is joy and sorrow in life. Erin Entrada Kelly, Matthew Cordell win Newbery, Caldecott Medals". American Library Association. February 12, 2018 . North America The tiger ( Panthera tigris) is the largest of all big cats. Less than 3,000 tigers exist in the wild today. It was once believed there were several tiger subspecies. The subspecies list was revised in 2017, showing only two subspecies: Panthera tigris tigris (tigers in continental Asia) and Panthera tigris sondaica (tigers in the Sunda Islands). Conservation Status: Endangered.

The jaguar is the only big cat of the four cats that roar that is native to North America. Although a few live in the US, they typically range from Mexico to Central and South America.
