Lamellar was used by steppe tribes such as the Khazar khaganate, and the Turkic warrior-elites who came to dominate the Islamic states of Syria in the eleventh century. There is a common tradition of steppe lamellar across Siberia, central Asia and into China. Kiritsuke iyozane is a form of laminar armor constructed from long strips of leather and or iron which were perforated, laced, and notched and made to replicate the look of real lamellar plates. These strips of simulated lamellar plates were much more rigid than real lamellar and they were assembled into armor items in the same way that the rows of lamellar armour were. Knowledge about military technology of the Viking Age (late 8th to mid-11th century Europe) is based on relatively sparse archaeological finds, pictorial representation, and to some extent on the accounts in the Norse sagas and laws recorded in the 12th–14th century.

Lamellar is pictured in many historical sources on Byzantine warriors, especially heavy cavalry. It is thought [ citation needed] that it was worn to create a more deflective surface to the rider's armour, thus allowing blades to skim over, rather than strike and pierce. Recent studies by Timothy Dawson of the University of New England, Australia, suggest that Byzantine lamellar armour was significantly superior to mail armor. [2] The earliest find of these relics were found in Denmark, seemingly belonging to the leading-warrior class based on the graves in which they were found.

Medical Definition

A number of lamellar plates were found in a the "garrison" at Birka, Sweden, dated to c.900-950. A re-examination and study of lames is discussed by Niklas Stjerna in 'Steppe nomadic armour from Birka', Fornvannien 99 (2004). Stjerna concludes that the style of the armour is wholly in line with Turkic steppe models, with parallels to depictions from East Turkestan; the lacing system is similar to a burial from Balyk-Sook, Altai, dated c.700-1000. A complete suit of lamellar has been found on Gotland, in the Baltic.
