About this deal

Straps and safety harnesses. A shoulder strap or safety harness is an excellent bonus feature. It takes some of the weight of the tool, making it more comfortable to use, and also helps balance it, for better manoeuvrability and a more precise cut. Now they’ve combined it with a high-power bada** string trimmer. Nobody is ready for this. It’s like Eleven being made in a lab. Truly the best of both worlds. Long! I love it when these have some length to them. Power on the WG184 Another defining “DIY” indicator for this tool has to be the small 13-inch cutting swath. That works to get the job done, but Pros won’t give it a second look. The Worx WG184 uses a snap-in spool that gives you an ample 20 feet of .080-inch spiral line. Worx also includes an adjustable metal spacer guard to help keep line from cutting into sensitive areas such as flower beds, vegetable gardens, tree trunks, and lawn ornaments.

Accessories included: Spool of 20ft weed eater line, edger wheels, 2 20V MaxLithium PowerShare batteries (optional), charger (optional) If this was a big, heavy, gas-powered trimmer and edger, it would be impossible to maneuver if the motor was close to the ground like that. But since this model weighs less than nine pounds, it’s not much of an issue. The WORX 40V lithium-ion battery ( 2 x 20V) can be recharged at any time (just like the batteries of modern mobile phones, no memory effect) so it is always ready to use. It lasts an average of 3 times more than a normal battery. The battery is equipped with a comfortable charge indicator. With the two 20-volt batteries working in tandem to deliver 40 volts of power, this particular weed eater is more powerful in comparison to other smaller electric cordless versions available today, in some cases twice as much. The battery takes a couple of hours to charge and provides around 25 to 30 minutes of active service, although you could stretch that out a little further by avoiding Turbo mode. However, indicators on the membrane button control panel give you some idea when you’re running low. It’s a little heavier and harder on the shoulders than some models, but it’s also more solidly built than most trimmers at this price. All in all, it’s a good choice for mid-sized gardens and, with the battery and charger included, excellent value.Hypothetically, you could use a strimmer to cut a lawn, but it would take a long time. Strimmers are much less efficient at this task than lawn mowers, and it’s more difficult to get an even cut. Not much else to say about the durability. It is a relatively simple machine. One thing I will say about the life of this trimmer is that it doesn’t appear to have a brushless motor. Sadly, brushed motors aren’t as durable or long-lasting as brushless motors, which have become the dominant motor type for battery-powered trimmers. Curved vs Straight shaft – I always, always, always prefer straight shafts. They are so much easier to use and control and are much longer than curved shafts. Curved shafts are good for clearing out a small piece of land unable to be mowed. But if you want to actually do some good trimming and edging, a straight shaft is much better. Curved shafts are difficult to maneuver and create a straight line for edging. And when I mentioned this model on a Zoom call with my six adult siblings, we all agreed that the interchangeable Power Share batteries were just the kind of practical touch a frugal family like ours can really appreciate.

Worx has been slowly revamping its 20V line of outdoor power tools with new 40V power supplies. Rather than create a third battery platform (see the Worx 56V string trimmer as an example), the company is taking a cue from Makita 18V X2 tools. The new Worx 40V Trimmer Edger Power Share system uses two 20V 2.0 Ah batteries. The included batteries run in parallel to give the Worx WG184 40 volts of cutting power.

Trimmer/edgers are built for keeping the edges of the lawn tidy, and weeding spaces where you would be spending hours on your hands and knees and returning to do it again next week if you weren’t using a weed eater.

That translates to longer sessions between recharging, as well as boosted performance within larger areas or when dealing with taller weeds. And he surprised me by being the one to note how lovely it is to trim the edges of the lawn without the usual uproar from a gas-powered motor. “We can even have a conversation while we work,” he added. No lights illuminated– At least one battery is not fully installed or the battery may be defective. Here I am going to give my honest thoughts about the WG184. For starters, I don’t like that it doesn’t have a brushless motor like most of EGO and Greenworks’ products. But that’s about the only thing I’m not in love with. Can your trimmer do this? (no).If you need to keep going for an hour or more, either invest in an extra battery or look for a strimmer with a rapid charger. Some can recharge the battery in under an hour, while others take two or three hours (or more) to do the job. Clint’s career has covered nearly the entire realm of audio and video production. After graduating at the top of his class with an Associates Degree in Recording Engineering, he began working for the famed Soundelux studios in 1994, one of the largest post-production companies specializing in audio for feature films & television. Working on a myriad of feature films, Clint honed his skills as a dialogue editor, foley editor, and sound designer. Years later, he moved into the expanding area of video editing, where he served as the company’s senior AVID video editor for three years. Handle types. There are two types of strimmer handles. The most common is a round, circular handle on the shaft of the strimmer, called a loop handle. It makes the strimmer easy and comfortable to control, and on the best models, it can be slid up and down the shaft, so you can adjust it to your height. Alternatively, there are ‘steer’ handles - two handles rather than a loop. These offer more control and let you use a comfortable scything motion when you cut, but they take up room, and can be a little more expensive. They’re also far more common on brushcutters and petrol strimmers than electric or cordless strimmers, so you might not find steer handles on many domestic models. Nor should you use these types of tools to cut thorny canes, dry tree branches, entire lawns that are larger than 100 or so square feet, or overgrown vegetable gardens at the end of the season.

Electric corded strimmers. Corded strimmers use a power cable connected to mains electricity. Depending on the length of the cable, these strimmers are more suitable for smaller gardens, but you can expand their reach with an extension lead. They’re also more dangerous than cordless strimmers because you run the risk of accidentally cutting the cable.Cutting head. The cutting head is the most important feature on a strimmer. It should be adjustable, so you can change the angle of the cut to cope with inclines and fiddly jobs. In most models, the head turns 90°, so you can trim along the edges of paths and flowerbeds. In the very best models, the cutting head also has wheels to help guide along edges and support the weight of the strimmer. Instead of providing a Low/Hi gearbox, Worx gives you a variable speed trigger. We don’t mind having variable speed on a trimmer, but a low-speed gear typically does better to conserve battery run-time. Interchangeable batteries – Get a dang tool that has batteries that you can use with other batteries. C’mon people – save money by doing this! You don’t have to keep buying new battery sets. There are a lot of tool companies that have batteries that work with a ton of different tools. But some of these companies have a bunch of different battery types. Be careful! This hybrid tool switches from trimming to wheeled edging by pressing an orange button on the shaft and rotating the head. Use the detachable, in-line wheel to define an edge or store it on the trimmer shaft when not in use. One light is flashing twice per cycle– At least one battery is over-discharged. Please recharge to two batteries at once before use or storage.
