The Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN lens for Fujifilm X-mount is constructed of 16 elements in 13 groups, including two FLD elements, two super low-dispersion (SLD) elements and two aspherical elements. It features a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, offers a minimum focusing distance of 25cm (9.8"), has an aperture range of F1.4 through F16 and uses a 67mm front filter thread. Weighing in at 405g and measuring 9.23cm in length, the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN C is quite a compact lens given its fast f/1.4 aperture. As seen in the photos below, it complements a camera like the new Panasonic G9 very well. As for weight and size, the 16mm f1.4 balances nicely with the Fuji bodies. It weighs just 14.3 oz/406 g, so it’s really not that heavy. In terms of dimensions, the 16mm f1.4 measures 2.8 x 3.6”/72.2 x 92.6 mm, and uses a 67mm filter. So, while the 16mm f1.4 is definitely larger than say Sigma’s 56mm f1.4 and 30mm f1.4, which also come in X mount, it’s still very similar to the Fujifilm XF 16mm f1.4 R WR lens in terms of size and weight.
If you have a full-frame Nikon camera, such as the Nikon Z6 II, you can use the Sigma 56mm with it, with your camera automatically diverting to crop mode to give the same 84mm equivalent focal length. You might therefore consider it to be a better priced (and smaller) version of the Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S lens for this type of camera. These three F1.4 prime lenses for X Mount will be available at SIGMA Authorized Dealers nationwide in April 2022. In addition, the SIGMA Art line includes three lenses for mirrorless cameras that cover a range of photographic needs: 19mm F2.8 DN | Art, 30mm F2.8 DN | Art, and 60mm F2.8 DN | Art. These lenses require no digital processing to correct for optical aberrations, instead using the optical system to minimize them. Naturally, there’s not a whole of point in having a fast f/1.4 lens if image quality doesn’t hold up when shooting wide-open. As it turns out, sharpness and contrast are maintained very well at the widest aperture. Another bonus is that the wide aperture and short 25cm minimum focus distance enable a fairly tight depth of field and good bokeh, enabling interesting perspective effects.The first in this SIGMA series of prime lenses for mirrorless cameras was the standard prime 30mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary, now followed by the wide-angle prime 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary. " When you’re able to achieve it, bokeh is ultra smooth and inviting, a characteristic that seems to be a constant with Sigma lenses, at least with the ones I’ve tested. I say, “when you’re able to achieve it” because even with an f1.4 aperture, this is still a wide angle lens, and therefore, depth of field isn’t always going to be ultra thin. As you can see below, I had to get pretty close to a subject to really see a noticeable thinness to the depth of field. But if you do get close enough, the out of focus areas are buttery smooth.
