About this deal

One of the favourite themes of romance manga is that of the childhood friends who go from being friends to lovers. Here are the three things that drew me to this: It's a slow-burn BL romance (the romance seems to burn at your emotions in the most satisfying way), a manga (so I get to see everything happen in such a pretty art style! I Cannot Reach you does go over the line of consent in one scene but it is very light and treated as a bad thing. And while more often than not I am left defeated by fetishizing, heteronormative, and fujoshi-ridden things to read, Kimi ni wa Todokanai was the light at the end of the tunnel for me. It takes me back to my first love story that wasn’t understood at the time as this series so skillfully is.

So the books, mangas, and webtoons that make me emotional when reading with loud reactions let me know I've hit the jackpot. Love triangles are decidedly not my favourite story convention, so I could see that plotline potentially becoming tiresome in the future, but, so far, I Cannot Reach You is a cute story of youthful first love that I’d say is worth checking out. I plan to pick up the next volume and see if Yamato can manage to get his feelings across to his ever so loveably clueless best friend! Kakeru, meanwhile, doesn’t seem to think of his friend in a romantic way and can’t quite wrap his mind around the possibility that Yamato might like him.Mika, although often resorting to chibi versions of the children, is especially good at showing us what’s going on by her characters’ facial expressions. I Cannot Reach You winds the clock back in Volume 6 to the time Yamato and Kakeru were in elementary school together – and were the same height! The way that Kakeru deals with the girls – including a chance meeting with Akane (the Kyoto trip) outside of school – and then Yamato himself shows us that he’s a lot more mature than before.

At the end of Volume 4, Yamato hugged Kakeru, saying, “I’m gonna work so much harder… so you’ll like me back. Designed and maintained by devoted anime fans, Anime UK News and it’s fledgling forum community is growing with each passing month, proving we are an ambitious and trusted resource for UK-based anime fans and beyond! I had a sneaking suspicion from the first chapter that this might be one of the cutest childhood best friends-lovers I'd ever read. I had actually started reading I Cannot Reach You online just on a whim and I quite liked the first few chapters.

Manga creator had been reported missing on Sunday ― Warning: this article contains statements about a possible suicide. I wish I could read Japanese for the raw chapters, because I could only find up to chapter 5 of English translation. If you’re looking for a hot and steamy BL romance, this isn’t the title for you – but for a heartfelt and beautifully observed manga about ordinary young people finding their way in life (with some genuinely touching insights) this can’t be bettered at the moment (except, possibly, by the equally charming yet moving Skip and Loafer). There are some indications that we might need to sift through some unnecessary drama before that happens, however, as Yamato’s younger sister also seems to have a crush on Kakeru!
