About this deal

Her daughters are chalk and cheese; Martha, the eldest, is a chip off the old block with her father’s characteristics, holding down a responsible job, and with a solid marriage the only thing not going her way is her need for a child. Martha is a most abrasive personality but she is far from the most obnoxious character in this story. I just adored the interaction between the family and the discovery of things that happened in the past that the mother kept from the girls really added to the drama. It made me relive a part of my past that is now behind me but I could certainly empathise with the situation. This was such an easy book to read, and the setting made it a perfect summer read to get stuck into!

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review. It was a lovely family drama that rests on the importance of communication and this evolves over the story. The main characters are really well crafted and the dilemmas they face never go OTT and it just gripped me as the drama played out, especially towards the end when they're faced with some challenging times. A keen gardener herself, Erica lives in Suffolk and has a fondness for Lake Como, Formula One motor racing and travel. But the one thing she has no control over is falling pregnant despite having been married ten months and both her and Tom keen for children.

However, the story then gets a little contrived with a rather irritatingly simple solution that feels too easy. The arrival of Ellis has also put a spanner in the works of her plans for Naomi to move closer and be a hands-on grandparent.Fully rounded, living with pasts that affect their current actions, the relationships between them all give an insight into the human condition. Partially set in the summer of 1981 when Prince Charles and Lady Diana are about to marry, Libby discovers her fiancé has been cheating on her. She and her husband have been trying to start their family but, after almost a year, nothing has happened. Thank you to everyone who wished me well yesterday, I can report that the cataract surgery was over in ten mind and didn't hurt.
