About this deal

The audiobook also has a section where they recorded themselves actually fishing, which was strange to listen to. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

And less on killing fish, for that matter – I was surprised by this when I started watching the series, but the book really doubles down on it, and I'd no idea how many fishermen now consider it absolutely anathema to keep, kill, or really do anything more than very slightly inconvenience a fish. Which ends up becoming a TV series on the BBC; and becomes one of the loveliest programmes that has ever existed. My main gripes concerned the actual physical book: there were a few typos that seemed a little too easy, and the black and white photographs were really poorly printed. I bought it for my best friend’s husband for Xmas – he hasn’t watched the programme, isn’t interested in fishing, but really enjoyed the book. I can't think of many things better than listening to my favourite old white men babbling on about anything and everything, and being genuinely funny and charming. In fact, Bob was dead for about 37 minutes and Paul was about the same amount away from certain death. However, if you want a gentle read about friendship, surviving health issues, fishing, enjoying the countryside, pies and pints, with a few recipes thrown in then this is the book for you.

I like him, I think he’s funny and clever in his humour, but watching him on TV I also sensed a sharp edge to him that meant I never loved him. They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant adverts on other sites. Unexpectedly, the programme captured me, because of Paul Whitehouse’s love for the water, the fish, the slowing down of life, and because of Bob Mortimer’s giddiness about the act of catching fish. Paul’s knowledge of fish comes to the fore in the chapter that acts as a guide to the river fish of Britain. like the telly programme did, which whilst seems obvious, was one of the main reasons I loved watching two old men fishing.Prompted by his retirement from his full-time job in the NHS, and through his continuing work in Nepal and Ukraine, Henry has been forced to reflect more deeply about what 40 years spent handling the human brain has taught him. The history surrounding how those techniques developed was interesting, and the nonsensical rivalries that existed among upholders of different methods in the Victorian era were amusing. I m not a fishing person but just listening to Paul and Bobs’ friendly banter was a joy and I did learn quite a lot about species of fish, best rivers to fish and different types of fishing! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There were some sections that made my eyes glaze over but I just like the warmth and heart (if you ignore the pun) of this book.
