About this deal

The reflection of Neo in Morpheus’ lenses is perhaps meant as a precursor to what he becomes — a virtual image of the future savior. As unique and startling as that novel was, without seeing the diversity of writing in the Bruce sterling edited anthology I might not have grasped what SF short fiction was really capable of.

The tools of global integration—the satellite media net, the multinational corporation—fascinate the cyberpunks and figure constantly in their work. Morgan and McDonald are fine, but just too interested in playing with genre tropes to really hook me.As a major voice in the Cyberpunk movement, Bruce Sterling paid tribute to the movement in Mirrorshades, now an important text in the history of Cyberpunk. I rushed into the nearest newstand and gathered up as much as I could find on the petroleum crisis and the nuclear energy hazard. had, have, and most importantly, perhaps will have is another which must be examined for elements other than imagery or mood if the cyberpunk elements are to be discovered.

I just got ahold of Mirroshades via Dano (see comment above), and “Solstice” was the first story I read. Sanity had ceased to be an issue; I knew somehow, that the city behind me was Tucson—a dream Tucson thrown up out of the collective yearning of an era.The Thirties had seen the first generation of American industrial designers; until the Thirties, all pencil sharpeners had looked like pencil sharpeners—your basic Victorian mechanism, perhaps with a curlicue of decorative trim. He also gets political in ways that I like in my SF–of course, Ken MacLeod’s “Fall Revolution” is one of my favorite series of relatively recent vintage, so make of that what you will. Some find the results bizarre, even monstrous; for others this integration is a powerful source of hope.

When I do still catch the odd glimpse, it’s peripheral; mere fragments of mad-doctor chrome, confining themselves to the corner of the eye. Together with Lewis Shiner, Sterling wrote the short story Mozart in Mirrorshades (1986) , in which he tells the story of a time traveler that goes back in time, with the intention of rewriting history. G. Ballard—an idolized role model to many cyberpunks—they often use an unblinking, almost clinical objectivity. Now that is the real thing, the straight goods from the mass unconscious, friend; that little girl is a witch. Innis told George it meant the now defunct International Construction Orbital Group, the original builders and controllers of Athena. This one was six months out of the service and slowly losing what the Air Force doctors had made of his mind. And a special thanks to Yoshio Kobayashi, our Tokyo liaison, translator of Schismatrix and Blood Music , for favors too numerous to mention. The image reflected in the mirror is a representation of the concept of virtuality — not only the reflection is unreal, but the whole world too.

From this, Jebe realizes that Mozart had incited the Masons and given them information, and threatens to kill Mozart. It’s good,’ said Kihn, polishing his yellow Polaroid shooting glasses on the hem of his Hawaiian shirt, ‘but it’s not mental; lacks the true quill. Wearing a pair of m i r r o r s h a d e s grants +1 Ego and provides protection against the flash effects caused by f l a s h b a n g g r e n a d es.Rock music is broadcast for those with radios by the company's propaganda officer, and a 19-year-old Wolfgang Mozart begins a successful career as a rock star. In the morning I’d drive down to Nogales and photograph the old brothels, something I’d intended to do for years. Science fiction—at least according to its official dogma—has always been about the impact of technology. But the mind had its own ideas, and Kihn’s opinion of what I was already thinking of as my ‘sighting’ rattled endlessly through my head in a tight, lopsided orbit.
