About this deal

Someone else is handling the vortexes that can teleport pawns from wherever they are to a vortex portal elsewhere in the maze. Even though there are ten different scenarios beyond the campaign tutorial to learn the game, I’m not certain the subtle variations in rules will hold my interest as groups continue to improve their tactics. In Scenario 2, you’ll use all four Exit Tiles (one in each pawn’s color), and each pawn must exit through the exit matching its color (and symbol). Magic Maze is a co-op game that effectively neutralises this by having everyone play in really time and not allowing them to talk! If you win at this game then you have co-operated well and used the rules to your advantage – if you lost, then it’s time to work out how you single that the time is nearly up!

This means there are at most four times during the game when players can decide together about what to do. But what Michael saw that nobody else did is that the only way to find the orange exit is with a green explore action. Magic Maze is simple and straightforward enough for most audiences, and it’s just plain fun, but it won’t be for everyone. It’s made up of a number of scenarios that start easy and get harder and more complex as you progress. This is a very good game of wordless communication and anticipation, and when you can fluidly complete the level with no miscommunications it’s a very good experience for the whole group. If only one player is watching the timer and trying to get other players to take it seriously, even the red “do something” pawn will not save the group. For example, I might be in charge of moving all of the characters North, while you are only allowed to move them East. All of the characters will begin the game on the starting tile and you will expose more tiles as the game progresses.

All of the tiles will have arrows telling you where you can move the characters, and most will also have a special action. The great thing about using them (other than getting more time that is) is that you are allowed to talk. It’s not uncommon for a player to move a pawn in one direction, only to have another player move the pawn right back. Some mention that the single player mode is really fun, and that it' s a great tile laying co-op game. The green pawn, when exploring from a green space, also permits a few moments of snatched conversation. It also allows “alpha gamer” quarterbacks–the bane of most cooperative games–an outlet for their direction of the other players without the annoyance of actually directing their moves. Not like any other game I’ve played before, it’s really good fun and gets you thinking and playing in a new way. Solo is surprisingly difficult, which I appreciated, especially because it feels the same as the regular game. Games, provides an interesting glance on the fantasy world as you take on the roles of four Heroes’ with a not so heroic quest.

If you believe board game accessibility is important and can support our Patreon you'd be helping make sure the site can continue with this valuable work. The Dwarf will be able to pass through small passages that no one else can; the Elf allows players to talk when he explores; the Mage can add two new tiles anywhere in the mall; and the Barbarian is able to turn off security cameras, which are found on new tiles that you’ll use from Scenario 7 onward. As you can probably tell, I think this game creates incredible little moments and the fact that its so quick to set up and reset is key to making a frustrating event a funny and fast pace thrill. If you like games that allow all players to have an equal say in how the team plays, then this is a good one to get. This is the point in the game where you take the large red piece that was spare and bang it uncomfortably down next to that player.

I can use these actions on any character, so together we have to move the pieces around the mall without talking. When all heroes are at their respective spaces they steal items, and then it’s time to make your escape without being caught. I’m not prepared to sacrifice it in exchange for the frustration, however comical, of missed opportunities.
