About this deal

Of course, even as the “study machine” perfect child, she made some questionable decisions that almost landed herself in PRISON🤑💅✨✨. i didn't read the synopsis, and all i knew was that i had to read this book bc it seemed like everyone loves it. i swear at some points i was giggling, melting, and screaming into my pillow reading henry and alice's banter, they were so so adorable! Partial scholarship student, Alice Sun, is top of her class -well actually tied for top of her class at Beijing International Boarding School where the wealthy are plenty.

i thought this was just a cute romance, which it was not 😭 that's my own fault, though, because the synopsis pretty accurately sums up the book. alice sun – as a former ib student and seeker of academic validation, she was a little too relatable. i also went in thinking this was going to be focused solely on the romance, but the slow burn is the longest slow burn i have ever read i might be exaggerating.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Inkyard Press for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions. I loved their banter and their scenes together, especially as Alice gradually realizes that Henry isn’t a bad person. her inner thoughts and feelings were also so heartfelt and im sure a lot of people are able to relate to her character <3 i adore her she deserves everything and more! and as she glares at him, cheeks pink, glowing with perfect rage, he can admit to himself: this is why he must win.

For how analytical she is, she is also such an emotional little bean who wears her feelings on her sleeve. When she thinks nothing can be worse than this situation, after an award ceremony and ugly banters with her nemesis Henry, she feels like something is truly wrong. I've been on a roll lately, I finished three books and wrote three reviews in the span of two days (not counting when I started the books, just when I finished them) and I'm so proud of myself because I am FINALLY out of my horrid reading slump.

Alice never really seemed too much into Henry at all, so the random flirty scenes didn’t really do much for me. Alice is very determined to make something of herself so she doesn’t waste everything her parents have sacrificed.

the bonus chapters are to die for we see a lot of henry’s feelings for alice and i was blushing and kicking my feet and screaming into my pillow because it was all so. Liang references a few characters who might have further knowledge of this phenomenon, but it's never explored further than a knowing look or vague comment. i’ve spent my whole life longing to be seen, but i’ve also come to realize that when people look too closely, they inevitably notice the ugly parts too. i was completely engrossed in every second of reading it, experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions that had me laughing, screaming, and crying all at once.Chanel was also a great character, she was so nice and friendly and seems like she would make a great friend, but none of these characters are real which pains me to type out. Instead, the main message seems to be that her actions were totally understandable and justifiable, and the blame really lies within the classist school system.
