About this deal

As ever with the New Scientist books, this is a great introduction to a topic — and in this case, it’s a fairly narrow topic: the brain, and how it works. Tell your friend that when they see you release the ruler, they are to pinch shut and grab it as fast as possible. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Including lists of what to eat and what to avoid, a quiz that determines your brain health, and 24 delicious recipes, Brain Food is the ultimate guide to a happy, healthy brain.

Each chapter begins by describing some phenomenology of a particular area of neuroscience, then guides readers step-by-step through an experiment, and concludes with a series of open-ended questions to inspire further investigation.

Most of the book, though, were theories on controversial subjects, such as the purpose of emotion, if the IQ of the human population is indeed declining, and the differences between male and female brains, with experiment results that were contradictory and in the end, rather inconclusive. It as interesting to read, as it had a lot of fascinating facts, such as how some animals, like dolphins and seals, sleep with half their brain asleep and half awake, the differences in the brain in the different stages in our lives, why 8 hours became the magical number for sleep, and more. He is the author of I, Mammal: The Story of What Makes Us Mammals (Bloomsbury, 2017) and The Brain Book (DK, 2021). Understanding how our brain works helps us evaluate our own thought processes, and why we behave in certain ways. From the way it controls and regulates our bodily functions to the mysterious complexities of the mind this book covers all facets in a very informative and graphical way that I found a most interesting read. I have no prior knowledge or background in neurosciences, which makes the book a little hard to read for someone like me but still, very accessible. Designed by two neuroscientists and an anatomist, it’s a fun way to learn about the structure and function of the human brain.

In this experiment, you will peer into your brainwaves to see what happens when the unexpected occurs and how the brain gets your attention. The last few chapters are fairly easier but I didn’t get enough of them since they provided merely theories and predictions of the future. Reads more like a HS textbook from the 1990s with a lot of over generalizations/ stereotypes than an up to date overview of what is currently known. Small, doable tasks offer a big payoff, and motivate us to keep learning and growing, with payoffs that include a boost in optimism, confidence, memory, cognitive skills, and more.

Collaborating with authors, instructors, booksellers, librarians, and the media is at the heart of what we do as a scholarly publisher. It provides an accessible guide to how the brain's structures and functions determine how the mind works, and how this fits into the bigger picture of our evolution and biology as a species. Ever feel that moment of excitement when you see your number displayed while waiting for an opening at the counter? Greg received the White House Champion of Change award from Barack Obama for his commitment to citizen science and is a Senior Fellow at TED.

This book explores the "mechanics" of the mind, re-examines memory, intellience and personality, and studies the nature of consciousness.
