About this deal

And as I continued to take in the positive feedback the ‘net had to offer on the game, I really had to ask myself if I really needed another 4x game in my collection. But for a game generally considered to be a wargame, Eclipse does a fantastic impression of a low-interaction eurogame at two players. Other than that though there really isn’t any other interaction, it’s mostly done indirectly by grabbing up those juicy tech tiles first or placing exploration tiles down in a particular fashion to block off other players. After that it jumps up to Orange with 2 hits, Blue with 3 hits and finally Red with four hits per die.

Many times you will be exploring and find a tile that is already inhabited by some “Ancients” or “Guardians”. For starters I’ve never gone under a play time of 3 hours which may be a bit long for those who like their games quick and simple. Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! The weird thing was that information for tracking the map playmat was detailed and there was a couple of notification everyday up to its arrival at my doorstep. The publishers clearly put a lot of thought into how the components would aid the gameplay experience.

There is a constant battle in resource management in this game, making it so you always need to be sure to have enough gold to maintain your population scattered across various planets. I placed them in the bags provided but am afraid the contents will spill out when I travel with the box. The tiles look really nice with a bit of that spot UV coverage on the wormhole icons and population spots. One player may focus all their attention on their dreadnought (the largest ship) and beef it up with a super fast tachyon drive (letting it move earlier in combat) and devastating antimatter cannons, while another player might build a fleet of small interceptors armed with plasma missiles that fire once at the very start of combat, attempting to knock opponents out of the sky before they can do anything. Despite its flaws, Eclipse 2nd dawn is the more approachable format for players that fills that particular space epic itch without having your hair turn gray during a game. Long enough to require lunch preparation, several trips to the restroom and perhaps an opportunity to have a bank CD mature. Will, thanks for this thoughtful review, and briefly comparing Eclipse 2nd Dawn with its more established cousin, Twilight Imperium.

Build – Spend some of your build points to add to your fleet or build a space station to improve your infrastructure. The immense amount of customization you have available to you is simply fun and the replayability is off the charts good. My goodness and the big bertha of them all, the GCDS space station sitting smack dab in the middle of the board. Combat is resolved at the end of each round in any sector with more than one civilization present, and usually involves throwing truckloads of colorful dice until one side is obliterated. The Galactic Council was formed to enforce precious peace, and it has taken many courageous efforts to prevent the escalation of malicious acts. When you take the upgrade action you can sift through the available upgrade tiles and pluck as many as your action allows and place them on your player board over your specific ships. Of course you will need to spend an amount of knowledge that you generated from your tech track so you won’t have access to everything available at the start.
