Written with a clear and non-judgemental insight into the human psyche, the story gathers pace and left me breathless. A unusual and thrilling tale of long kept secrets and dangerous obsession, combined with a cast of very strong characters.

In a parallel story, with a different timeline, we see where Cleo is now and learn how she reached that place. With very strong and expertly drawn characters I found myself invested in them all the way through, though there were some necessary distasteful ones. My Other Husband is fantastic in so many ways, it draws you into Cleo’s life, like your standing outside the window watching the drama unfold. I had high hopes for this book after seeing all the rave reviews but ultimately it fell flat for me very early one. I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Headline via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion. The characterisation is excellent even those who are unlikeable are well portrayed and you gasp at some of the dialogue with the racist and sexist comments that Cleo is on the receiving end of especially in her career. I wasn't expecting to get so emotionally involved with the characters, and i have to admit that the last chapter (before the epilogue) literally had me in tears. A clever and multi-layered dark thriller, My Other Husband is a gripping read that left me gasping in shock more than once. What I thought was going to be a crime/ thriller, turned out to be a boring story with a few murders briefly mentioned. As the reader gets to know more about modern-day Cleo, we are also taken back twenty-five years to when Cleo was a university student.

None of the characters were likeable, the story took an age to get going, and the ending was both unbelievable (not in a good way) and disappointing. The twists and turns as everything unfolds was second to none and every time you think you’d worked something out, you hadn’t! I have to admit, this is a huge plus point for me as Brighton is my hometown, so I love reading novels set there. Heath is really nothing at all as we first imagine, and as his behaviour becomes increasingly out of control, and his jealousy and paranoia increases, his actions have such a profound effect on Cleo.

If you haven’t read anything by this author already, you need to and I will shout about it until you do 😂 Another massive 5 star read for me! On the surface she appears to have it all until her past catches up with her and she has to dismantle the life she’s built for herself piece by piece before anyone finds out about her other husband. Dorothy Koomson has always been one of my favourite authors - I have absolutely loved every single one I have read, and this one didn't disappoint. Dangerous, compelling, obsessive love mixes with murder, violence and desperation until the story comes to a head with an unexpected reveal.

Managing to build a new life for herself with Wallace, she begins to live her dream, but this soon turns into a nightmare and Cleo is convinced that Heath is back, watching her and doing his very best to harm those people who mean the most to her. TW: racism, grooming, paedophilia, murder, sexism, misogyny, harassment, mental health, rape ⚠️ This was a really good slow burner that hits you with twists and turns when you least expect it. Cleo is a successful author, but the people in her life are dying the same way as the characters in her novels are. This book is a masterclass in perfectly-timed plot reveals, 3D characters and a very clever what-can-possibly-happen-next atmosphere that keeps you turning those pages. This was so close to being a five-star read for me but the only thing that made me drop half a star was because of how the story ended.
