About this deal

But suffice it to say the novel presents many thought provoking conversations on race and the experiences of Black women in America, both past and present. Elise caught Andy’s eye in the rearview as they sailed through the twenty-foot-tall black iron gates of the estate. As important and powerful as the subject matter of this book is, the storyteller left a lot to be desired. John daughters—Elise, Giovanni, and Noele— have gathered at the family’s fabulous (complete with Ferris wheel! The audiobook has separate voices for each character, and Ariel Blake, Kineta Kunutu and Lynnette Nicholas did a great job of telling such an emotional story!

Some came right out and asked it, and social media was a cauldron of racist epithets; it was Meghan Markle hysteria times three.Paul’s debut is a riveting, often heartbreaking tale that explores race, privilege, and celebrity in America through the eyes of a one-of-a-kind character. The truth behind Kitty's ascent to stardom from her beginnings in the segregated South threatens to expose a web of unexpected family ties, debts owed, and debatable crimes that could, with one pull, unravel the all-American fabric of the St. Spanning multiple generations, the story focuses on White actress and celebrity icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Kitty Karr. But what she discovers in one of Kitty's journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty.

It’s just the story, didn’t have what it took to feel like the intention of Kitty’s journey, and how we ended up reading her story, really mattered in the end. Though Paul crowds the narrative with far too many underdeveloped characters and makes a few too many implausible plot leaps, she ably describes Kitty's transformation and unflinchingly details the racism, misogyny, and exploitation Kitty faced as a young woman. I feel like we didn't get enough about Elise, her mother, her father, or her sisters, or any of the people at the memorial. What is less obvious, by design, are the steps many people took to create new lives for themselves once they reached LA from less hospitable places.Kitty Karr Tate epitomizes the American Dream—a success fueled by bold ambition, ingenuity, and a healthy dose of breathtaking beauty.

John estate, the labyrinth was constructed of leafy green hedges and rose bushes that increased in height and girth further into the maze. A multigenerational saga that traverses the glamour of old Hollywood and the seductive draw of modern-day showbiz. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Ariel Blake, Kineta Kunutu and Lynnette Nicholas and they were great. Sequestered for a week already, Elise found her stress now was compounded by her sisters’ pending arrival.

In this sweeping and dazzling debut, I was ushered behind the velvet rope guarding the pristine glamour of Old Hollywood and whispered the wildly complex secrets hidden by larger-than-life on-screen personas. In Paul’s appealing if overlong debut, a Black Hollywood family reckons with a surprising and complicated past.
