In concise and sober fashion, German historian Steinbacher traces the history of Auschwitz from a medieval trading town to the major extermination camp of the Holocaust. They are individuals with individual personalities who decide (individually) to let him into their company after they each have time to see what he’s about.

At one level the book works as a myth of the Green Man, leaves in his hair, escaping the soul-deadening systems of modern life.I was really fascinated with this true story of a young Frenchman from Normandy who lived in the woods for 7 years with deer. I decide to base the rhythm of my life on his; except that, since my stomach has just the one chamber, when he chews the cud, I meditate instead. One trusts Delorme enough to follow his lead to safety during a hunt and then shares what the human taught him with other deer!

My only critique was that the ending/resolution to book was very quick and I felt I could have used more information. He knows he can stay in the forest and die with his friends - or he can leave, and speak their truth to a human world that desperately needs to hear it. He said a couple of times that he didn’t want to anthropomorphise the deer, but continued to do so (“she was proud” etc) which I found slightly annoying.Above all, he experiences the beauty, pain, fear, and joy of a life lived within nature, not separate from it. Yet one suspects this is the only kind of testimony that could come from someone who has, in many ways, eschewed the human world. I can respect that but as a committed and caring reader I felt something was missing and unresolved.
