In the Netflix series, Karube was preparing to propose to a woman he worked with at a bar, who happened to be the lover of his boss whilst in the Manga he was single and owned a bar despite his age. One night, he and his two best friends—a hormonal goofball named Chota, and big, brooding Karube—witness an unexpected fireworks display over the city.

Karube and Shibuki argue, causing Chota to have to guess the answer quickly and have arrows fired at them. It's a short-lived victory, however, as they discover that winning only earns them a few days' grace period.

Seeing its delicacies and lively ambiance, they think the place is a dream; unbeknownst to them, it will be the setting for their first deadly game. Chota is a slightly more motivated slacker, spending his time thinking about girls, and Karube works as as bartender. A high school girl, Ariju Kojima, wakes up one morning in Kyoto, where it seems as if decades have passed without a soul. Arisu hopes they are close to going home, but the games the Face Cards play might be worse than any of the cruelties the Dealers came up with. She meets ten various men and women who, like herself, have lost their memories and wear picture cards of playing cards.

These characters are introduced after a problem for Chota leaves Arisu and Karube to enter their next game, the Five of Spades, which is told across the equivalent of four comic book issues in this collection, and features a villain in a horse mask.
