About this deal

Every time Houston did an interview, she was asked who she was dating; and in 1987, a serious profile in Time magazine made reference to the rumours, much to Houston’s horror. I came in thinking it was a biography of Whitney Houston, but it was actually Robyn Crawford’s biography that included her memories of her time with Whitney. Robyn knew Whitney was struggling with addictions and it seemed that made better headlines then the renowned career she had paving her own way in music.

Together during countless sold-out world tours, behind the scenes as hit after hit was recorded, through Whitney's marriage and the birth of her daughter, the two navigated often challenging families, great loves, and painful losses, always supporting each other with laughter and friendship. Had Houston not been in the spotlight, her teenage romance with Crawford would probably have fizzled out anyway, leaving them free to continue on comfortably as friends. I need someone that I know loves me for me,” Houston once said of Crawford and as the star’s celebrity increased, Crawford became one of the very few people she could trust. The tragedy is that Whitney was not only trying to convince others she was into men, she was also try to convince herself. The saddest part is y’all; Whitney didn’t live to tell her own story but everyone else is YET HERE feeding us their side. Loved her inclusion of different moments of musical history and song-based lessons she was a part of thanks to Whitney.

This is a searing indictment of the Houston family and the way they exploited and manipulated Whitney, enabled her addiction, drove a wedge between her and the love of her life, and only served themselves. Well firstly there is no way a woman let alone anyone would allow someone who they have been intimate with in the past to be around their spouse (in this case Bobby Brown) yet alone in their lives (working relationship or not) unless they deeply cared for them, just no way! Strangely enough, Crawford’s loving yet honest portrayal of her friend cured me of feeling sorry for Houston, which I’ve done for years. Meanwhile, Crawford was harangued, marginalised, and allegedly threatened with violence by the singer’s family. Crawford describes the dynamic that LGBT kids have experienced from the beginning of time: the two could be open about being inseparable best friends, but had to hide the physical side of their relationship.A Song for You ] is a story of becoming, of starting over and loving again, of healing in immeasurable ways that are both scarring yet beautiful. It was unclear why more wasn't done to protect Houston's assets and best interests financially and otherwise. Since Whitney's death in 2012, Robyn has stayed out of the limelight and held the great joys, wild adventures, and hard truths of her life with Whitney close to her heart.

Robyn did Whitney justice in this book by highlighting the immense highs and the deep lows of being in the shadow of Whitney Houston. In her long awaited memoir she finally shares her side of all the stories we’ve heard from so many others. It’s a stretch to recast the silence brought on by homophobic bullying as noble, but there is something very moving about the way Crawford came to regard her secret history with Houston: as their only private space in a life dominated by public interest. Viewed from the outside, the confusing thing about all this is that, for much of the time, the relationship appeared to be starkly uneven. My parents were huge fans of hers, and my mom especially loved The Bodyguard and The Preacher's Wife.

After analyzing my thoughts I have come to realize this book is the story of a woman that couldn’t save her friend so she saved herself. They were on drugs from being teenagers - so the reason why a woman so gifted as Whitney would fall so deeply into drugs has its roots right there.

Officially, they were just friends, but even privately they resisted acknowledging what was really going on. Cocaine had been part of the two women’s lives as teenagers, until Crawford’s mother had found out and yelled at her to quit. It’s refreshing to hear the story of Whitney’s rise and fall from a different perspective other than that of her family. The focus of Houston's life always centered around music, and Crawford wrote extensively the first time she heard Houston sing in her church choir. I hope writing this book was cathartic for her as she too needed a hug or two after witnessing all that was revealed in this book. Houston had a few close friends and devoted staff who were committed to her success and wellness, this would quickly change following her marriage.
