There have been sightings from many parts of the British Isles but most records are from eastern counties. It was later learned that the color change was due to hormonal changes in response to varying temperatures. The segmental divisions are deep, each segment being swollen in the middle and transversely wrinkled on the posterior half; the spines are long and tapering to a very long point, shining black, and bear a number of fine white hairs, each having a black swollen base; the two anterior pairs of dorsal spines are branched, each having two; the first segment is spineless. They can usually be found in hardwood forests, though they have been found in virtually all habitats.

By the beginning of August butterflies were coming in from the east, possibly from Germany and Poland where the species regularly breeds. Among several claims to fame in the history of Camberwell is an interesting fact related to butterflies. These occasional visitors have been found all over the UK, especially in East Anglia and the South East. Scientists hypothesized that traumatic heat or cold shocks "during a critical period of its development can cause profound changes". On May 5th another batch hatched, and all did the same as the first lot; and on the 16th a very large batch of eggs hatched which were laid on the same branch as those hatched on the 5th, and directly the larva emerged they all started spinning and crawling up the branch till they arrived at the part already covered with web by the previous brood, and, following the web-covered branches, every individual of the large batch ascended and joined the elder company, which were eleven days old.This species is a rare migrant to the UK but like all of our migrant butterflies, occasional large influx years do occur. On occasions, the gregarious mourning cloak larvae will completely defoliate ornamental trees, in nurseries, plantations, and parks. The film is about the lead singer in a punk band, 'Camberwell Beauty', who undergoes plastic surgery to reconstruct her face after a motorbike accident, but is horrified to discover that she is now beautiful.

Compelling to read, but most of the characters are quite awful people, perhaps a sign of our society . If disturbed they curve upward the anterior portion of the body and remain in that attitude for a short time. The ground colour is a deep velvety black, the surface is minutely but roughly granulated, being covered with extremely minute points and densely sprinkled with pearl-white warts, each emitting a fine white hair, some being of considerable length and the majority slightly curved.The only time he does anything is when he slaps his mother across the face, and in that he imagines he’s some kind of screen siren. This butterfly is a great wanderer and is often seen in gardens feeding on rotting fruit, such as plums.
