It’s actually very clean, and with proper exposure and a bit of additional work, it’d be about as clean as I’ve seen with a still camera, though with Sony’s JPEG system (and Adobe’s raw conversion tools) I’m losing a bit of detail due to noise reduction.
In 4K mode via the HDMI port, things are also good, though the 8-bit limitation is a little bit frustrating for a camera that’s supposedly good in low light. Put another way: if you’re thinking about jumping into a new system such as the A7 series because of a camera like the A7s, then jump in.In my use, I’ve found that 25,000 is about the maximum usable ISO setting, which is about where the Nikon D4s sits. Hence, only the really, really dimmest of tones will still be below the (relatively high) downstream read noise floor of the 6D, and so you'll generally find pushes to be more reasonable. I usa an x-series fuji als small camera due to its comparatively very good high iso performance - with prime lenses. Higher than that starts to get you noise that just can’t be removed without killing edges completely. More importantly why is the large still button disable in video mode forcing you to use the joke reset sized record button on the camera ?
The new electronic shutter on this camera literally makes it so you have ZERO noise what-so-ever while shooting…. Of course, these are extreme cases of pushing the shadows, but it gives some insight into the differences between the a7r and a7s camera sensors. Sorry, but all the cameras you mentioned are extremely capable, so pick up any of them and get great results in most cases.With the low light performance of this camera it’s a win win for anyone who uses it for that sole purpose alone! If you’re a photographer switching from another brand, such as Nikon or Canon, then you may be more into the Mark 2 version of this camera instead ( Sony a7S II). I wonder if Cinema 5D's results are from video that's had some level of noise reduction applied to it? In low light, the area over which light is collected becomes important (more is better), and the A7s has a lot of additional area compared to the other two cameras. The A7S III has received an upgraded ergonomic design that is dust and moisture-resistant just like the Sony A7R IV.
Since the church I photographed in had screens you could see that happen in the background, which wasn’t too thrilling. Steen Bay - absolutely right, ISO 3200 is the lowest available ISO when using the SLog2 mode (which appears to equate to the same sensor amplification as ISO 640 mode does with a standard tone curve, confusingly). Even for a videographer I think it is hard to justify, because good 4K options will be readily available very soon, this camera will lose its marked value so fast. The A7SIII is capable of real-time eye and animal AF and has a 30% recognition improvement over the previous model.A7S is mainly because of the quite shutter, as I need to be unnoticed, and also 4K, but mainly for potential future use. Overall, the A7s has all the usual Sony attributes: good color discrimination and deep dynamic range, for example.
