About this deal

There are many ups and downs associated with parenthood, as we see in the story that follows in Sarah Vaughan’s Little Disasters.

I like the exploration of the dynamics of friendship and family as things shift and change and this is sharply observed. While she may stay buttoned up outside of the home, amongst her friends and at the children's activities, inside the home, things are far from perfect. At times, I definitely had to suspend disbelief, but there were also parts that felt very real and honest. Women have written to Vaughan, saying that Disasters helps explain these deep and alarming shadows of motherhood.

Following on from Anatomy of a Scandal, Vaughan delivers another highly emotional, nail-biting read that you’ll tear through in no time at all. Liz is immediately suspicious of the story Jess has produced to explain young Betsey’s injuries, it just doesn’t make sense.

The story is told in alternating viewpoints; both Jess and Liz, varying across timelines, so that the suspense pulls you in, and brings you along from start to finish. She was 19 weeks pregnant with her second baby in July 2007 when she collapsed in the street and crawled home. This was a good character study viewing a side of the other side of parenthood we often tend to push to the side. This is a really well-written piece of women’s fiction and I recommend it, even though it will break your heart a little.Little Disasters is a book that rips open the modern practices and potential myths of present day parenting. Little Disasters, which grips and guides readers into dark moments of motherhood, is the novel most deeply rooted in Vaughan’s own life. Liz can't allow herself to think her friend Jess purposely harmed Betsey, but knows she has to report the incident to her superior, Dr. She has always been careful to hide her anxieties, but one ill advised decision has opened her Pandora's Box, and now there's no shutting the lid again. The walls push in; the heat bears down and the noise - the terrible crying that has been going on for three hours - engulfs her.
