About this deal

This book was immediately relatable and not only guides you in seeing that your child is all right, but that you are too! I may be interpreting certain actions incorrectly as well as taking things personally when they don’t have anything to do with me as a parent. Easy to dismissed boy's when they are growing and this book invites you to stop and think about what might be going on for them.

It’s a lot of nice thoughts but my child is failing out of high school and letting him isn’t really an option. There is always one idea that you had not considered, or a new vocabulary you needed to have conversations with your teen son. It offered some solid advice and some that I thought to be a bit unrealistic, although it may be realistic for other kids (like writing their feelings in a journal… a great idea but I’m not sure it applies to the kids he’s talking about). The demands on a teenager today are more intense than when we were teenagers, mostly in the academic sense. Good advice about taking a step back and giving your son room to fail as a means of growing toward independence. To be fair, I did get a couple of tips and insights that I will use, which is why I rated the book 3 stars.

He has presented widely to both parents and educators on opting out, child development, and learning disabilities, and has appeared on “Good Day New York” and other programs to discuss topics ranging from discipline to the impact of video games on children. He contradicts almost everything he says in the book and he wastes tons of pages assuming you’re some kind of helicopter parent. I hope this has been a helpful insight into an increasingly common scenario, and that I have reassured you that you have lots of options if you are dealing with this at the moment. As school starts up again it’s important to mention the key study skills which will put your child in the best position to succeed this academic year. D., is a clinical psychologist with more than 20 years of experience working with children and teens. Overall valid advice for raising any teenager but had some insights and suggestions that are more relevant to teenage boys.

Highly recommended if you have a teenage son - if you don't, you won't find much of interest or application here. The first part covers the why your son behaves the way he does, using relatable scenarios from his life and practice, along with a more heavy chapter about the science of the teen boy's brain and underdeveloped pre-frontal cortex. No magic pill , real advice for parents who want to WORK to change their relationship with their child and truly help him. This book not only explains teenage boys minds, it offers solutions or suggestions to issues we as parents might be facing.I could clearly identify with the explanations of the author in the causes of underachievement in teenage boys. I REALLY worry about the impact the rising levels of perfectionism in young people is having on their mental health.
